Volkswagen brings added ‘Style’ to Polo range

VOLKSWAGEN has expanded its Polo light hatch range in Australia with the addition of an 85TSI Style variant, which at $24,990 plus on-road costs stands as the flagship among the regular models and defers only to the higher-performance GTI.
Replacing the limited-edition Polo Beats, the Style builds on the specification of the 85TSI Comfortline – the latter priced $2200 downstream at $22,790 plus on-roads – and adds a number of features that Volkswagen Group Australia values at approximately $4000.
These additional features include 16-inch Las Minas alloy wheels, darkened LED tail-lights, dark tinted rear windows, front sports comfort seats with height and lumbar adjustment, dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning, front and rear carpet mats, black headlining, Deep Iron Metallic trim inserts, an 8.0-inch Discover media infotainment system, active info display, Beats audio system and wireless phone charging.
It also carries high-grade equipment found in the 85TSI Comfortline, such as automatic headlights and rain-sensing windscreen wipers, leather-clad multi-function steering wheel, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, four USB ports, cruise control, power windows, heated exterior mirrors, split-folding rear seat and auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Standard safety equipment includes front assist with city autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian monitoring, driver fatigue detection and tyre pressure monitoring.
Two options are available on the Style, including the $1500 Driver Assistance package which bundles adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic assist, park assist, power-folding door mirrors and VW’s proactive occupant protection system.
Metallic and pearl-effect paint is also available for $600.
Like the 85TSI Comfortline, the Style makes use of a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engine producing 85kW of power and 200Nm of torque, driving the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The Polo Style will land in Australian showrooms in August, replacing the Beats which launched in August last year and was limited to 500 units locally.
Pricing remains steady for other variants, starting at $18,790 plus on-roads for the 70TSI Trendline manual and maxing out at $31,990 for the GTI.
The GTI uses a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder petrol engine that musters 147kW and 320Nm, and combines with a six-speed DSG dual-clutch auto.
Sales of the Polo range have dipped slightly in the first four months of the year, with 1828 sales representing a 7.4 per cent slide over the 1974 sold to the same point in 2018.
It currently sits seventh in the light-car segment, behind the likes of the Hyundai Accent (4407), Mazda2 (3413) and Toyota Yaris (3016).
