VOLKSWAGEN’S ageing Jetta has been a consistent sales performer over the past four years in Australia, carving out a niche as a premium-ish compact mid-sized sedan alternative to the Mazda6 and Honda Accord Euro. But the flurry of new-model activity associated with the closely related Golf means the Jetta’s lustre has started to fade a little, so VW has given the old timer a fillip in the form of lower prices, higher equipment levels and two new diesel engines, including a sub-$30K entry-level model known as the 77TDI. Will it be all enough to keep the Jetta flying until the all-new version arrives in 2011?
