Golf R Wagon joins Volkswagen’s full-time line-up

BY TUNG NGUYEN | 30th May 2017

VOLKSWAGEN’S Golf R Wagon will become a permanent fixture in the German brand’s model line-up from January, five months after the flagship small hatchback and limited-edition Wolfsburg Edition vehicles land in showrooms in August.

As reported earlier, pricing will remain static on the flagship Golf R hatch – $52,990 before on-roads for the six-speed manual and $55,490 for the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic – while the big-booted, automatic-only Wagon version is priced $2000 higher at $57,490.

Both versions are powered by an upgraded 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder which produces 213kW of power and 380Nm of torque – up from the 206kW of the superseded model.

Volkswagen has yet to release an official zero to 100km/h time, but expect to see the powered-up hot hatch and wagon hit the landmark triple digits in around five seconds.

The Golf R Wagon will also include a drive select mode which utilises Volkswagen’s adaptive chassis control and allows drivers to select from a number of differing vehicle profiles including comfort, normal and sport.

Standard equipment across both body styles includes a new 9.2-inch infotainment screen with gesture and voice control, leather-appointed interior, heated front seats, power folding mirrors, 19-inch Spielberg alloy wheels, an LED lighting signature front and rear, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, and chrome roof rails on the Wagon version.

Safety features include seven airbags, a reversing camera, autonomous emergency braking, automatic headlights and wipers, and parking sensors front and rear.

The Driver Assistance Package will cost $1300 and includes adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while a panoramic sunroof will add another $1900 to the price.

The launch of the new “7.5” Golf R will also mark the return of the limited Wolfsburg Edition – available in both hatch and wagon forms and limited to 300 units in each body style.

The Wolfsburg Edition vehicles will be an automatic-only affair, with the hatchback wearing a $57,990 sticker price, while the Wagon costs $59,990.

However, Wolfsburg Edition-badged cars will gain 19-inch Pretoria wheels, carbon-fibre mirror caps, new paint options, Nappa leather interior, an upgraded sound system, as well as the Drive Assitance Package as standard.

Buyers can also opt for a panoramic sunroof on the Wolfsburg Edition for $1900.
