Bespoke paint for limited VW Golf R Final Edition

BY CALLUM HUNTER | 17th Jan 2020

IN ITS final homage to its beloved Mark 7.5 Golf, Volkswagen has launched a limited run of 450 Golf R Final Editions priced from $57,990 plus on-road costs, 150 of which will be available in three previously unavailable, hand-painted colour schemes.

With no mechanical changes made to the 213kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, the Golf R Final Edition’s performance figures remain the same as the standard car but it does pick up a few added features.

These include 19-inch Black Pretoria alloy wheels, Carbon Nappa leather appointed upholstery, gloss black door mirrors, Dynaudio premium audio system, dark tinted rear side and rear window glass and a unique R Final Edition badge.

For an extra $300 and while stocks last, punters can opt for one of the three limited colour options – Victory Blue, Viper Green Metallic (off the old Scirocco R) and Violet Touch Pearlescent – which are applied to the car by hand away from the assembly line.

According to Volkswagen product marketing manager Jeff Shafer, no other mass volume manufacturer “could offer such a bespoke finish”.

“As ever with Golf R special editions, we’ve added value for as small a premium as possible over the standard R,” he said.

All of the standard Golf R’s equipment is included in the Final Edition while a panoramic electric glass sunroof is available for an extra $1900.

Volkswagen says the Golf R was Australia’s most successful compact performance car in 2019 with 2035 sales, making up 14 per cent of the total Golf range’s sales (14,335).

While the Golf R final edition is tipped to touch down in Australia in May, the regular Golf R will continue to be sold from $55,490 plus on-road costs.
