MORE than 17 million Golfs have been screwed together and sold across the world since it was launched in 1974. But Down Under, particularly in recent years, its Euro charm and hefty sticker price hasn't excited small car buyers. The 1.6 GL has the quality, comfort, refinement and features of a car sporting a propeller badge or three-pointed star, but lacks in the performance and handling stakes.
