REDESIGNED axle components are claimed to have significantly improved the ride and handling of the Golf. It retains MacPherson struts with wishbones at the bottom, but spring response and straight-line stability have been improved. At the rear, Golf has a new torsion beam design, with dampers and coil springs arranged separately. The springs are positioned under the side members such that the luggage bay width has been enlarged to more than one metre.
