Volkswagen Caddy changes gears for 2023

BY MATT BROGAN | 4th Nov 2022

VOLKSWAGEN Commercial Vehicles has upgraded its Caddy compact light commercial van range with updated in-cabin and safety technology for 2023, with pricing remaining unchanged.

The MY23 Volkswagen Caddy Cargo, Crewvan, People Mover and California range now features wireless device charging as standard, with Caddy Cargo and Crewvan upgraded with the same standard safety technologies previously exclusive to People Mover and California variants.

Lane-keep assist that operates above 60km/h is now standard on all MY23 Caddy variants while an updated forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system on all variants can now detect cyclists and pedestrians between 5km/h and 85km/h.

Volkswagen says the system can detect pedestrians at parallel or right angles to the vehicle.

A new decorative chrome trim has been applied to the sliding doors, door rails and tailgate of Caddy Life variants, which along with the Crewvan and California gain pop-out side windows that open by around 40mm for additional cabin ventilation.

Volkswagen said that despite the improvements to its MY23 Caddy range, it is still hamstrung by semiconductor supply challenges, making the Discover Media satellite navigation system and park assist function unavailable on Caddy Cargo variants.

The fifth-generation Caddy range is offered in a total of six variants across two wheelbases (Standard and Maxi). Standard wheelbase models are now 92mm longer than the fourth generation at 4500mm with a wheelbase of 2755mm (up 73mm) while the Maxi has a 2970mm wheelbase and is 4853mm long.

The Caddy range continues to be motivated by a choice of a 75kW/280Nm turbo-diesel engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission (TDI280) or a 90kW/320Nm turbo-diesel paired with seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (TDI320), with an 84kW/220Nm turbo-petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (TDI220) also available.

A five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and capped-price servicing offer matches that of VW passenger cars, while optional three- and five-year prepaid service packs can also be bundled.
