THE Bora V6 4Motion marks the Australian debut of Volkswagen's electronic stability program (ESP). Working in conjunction with other electronic systems such as the anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control (ASR, or anti-slip regulation) and an electronic differential lock (EDL), ESP can recognise potential trouble for the driver and deliver signals to stabilise the car via a combination of ABS, ASR and the throttle position. It does this by using data supplied by the ancillary systems and by measuring the speed of the car around its vertical axis (yaw movement), the lateral movement of the car, the brake pressure being applied and the angle of the front wheel. If ESP detects understeer, for example, it will apply braking force to the inside rear wheel.
