SAFETY features of the New Beetle include dual front airbags, with seat-mounted front side airbags. Seatbelt pretensioners with belt force limiters and web-lock elements are standard, as are four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock (and electronic brake-force distribution) function. Typical of all modern passenger cars, the New Beetle also has side impact reinforcement bars and deformable safety zones built in. Dubious safety features that point to Beetles of the past include the "Jesus Bar" positioned ahead of the front passenger and "Panic Straps" - grabhandle loops at the centre pillars for rear seat passengers.
