ALL RAV4 models receive an all-alloy 1998cc twin-cam engine with Toyota's VVTi featuring variable valve timing system. It delivers 110kW of power at 6000rpm (up 15 per cent) and 192Nm of torque at 4000rpm (up 7 per cent), enough for Toyota to claim 0-100km/h acceleration times of 10.6 seconds for the manual.

Fuel economy is down to 9.0 L/100km on the city cycle. The new engine is 23kg lighter than the engine it supersedes in RAV4. In-built mountings in the block and bearing cap for ancillaries such as the water pump, thermostat, oil filter and air conditioner compressor improve package efficiency and reduce service weight. Double-walled stainless steel extractor-style exhaust headers aim to provide maximum performance and durability, as well as lower emissions.
