VERSATILITY in the new RAV4 is the first standout feature. Like the Echo, the RAV4 brings with it a sliding rear bench seat, which transforms the compact interior. Each half of the 50/50 split-fold rear bench can recline, fold, tumble or be completely removed. A deep, flat cargo area and handy items like luggage tie-downs, shopping bag hooks and a rear power outlet complete the package. Safety is the next standout for the RAV4. Following the trend set by Subaru's Forester last year, the RAV4 has a centre-rear lap-sash seatbelt. The sash portion of the belt retracts into the roof when not in use. The effectiveness of the seatbelt improvement is blighted, however, by the inclusion of only two rear headrests - one for each outboard position. Child restraint anchorage points are placed in the optimum position - on the rear seatback - to rule out restriction of rear visibility or luggage space. Dual airbags are standard on all RAV4 models, as are front seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters.
