Prius does not share any of its body structure with other Toyotas. The five-door hatchback is clearly aerodynamic (Cd 0.26) yet stands relatively tall to help provide legroom front and back. The roof profile incorporates pronounced aero-inspired longitudinal indents that give it an unusual look from the front or rear. The sharply cut-off tail incorporates an additional rear window below the spoiler to help with vision. The car is designed to minimise overall weight (although it is up 45kg on the previous model) via the use of aluminium for the bonnet, front and rear bumpers, rear hatch, brake calipers, some suspension members, and fuel pipes. The fuel tank is also made from multi-layered plastic. The aerodynamic profile shows in minimal frontal area, steeply raked windscreen and the abrupt cut-off at the tail. Twin longitudinal indents in the roof are part of the aero design. The minimal front and rear overhangs help contain overall length despite a relatively long wheelbase.
