SUDDENLY, diesels are becoming the in thing - even BMW and Audi are introducing oil burners to their X5 and Allroad off-roader ranges. But as the newcomers flock in, they will have to take on four-wheel drive stalwarts like Toyota's LandCruiser GXV. In late 2000 Toyota changed its top-spec 100-Series from petrol V8 to turbo-diesel power as it endeavoured to give the ultra-luxury - but also fundamentally Cruiser V8 - Lexus LX470 sales room in the market. Turbo-diesel may sound less sexy but the end result is a beast with good manners, manageable fuel consumption and even more suitability for serious off-road work.
