THE automatic turbo-diesel uses the same electronically controlled transmission as the V6 petrol variant. It has four speeds and uses a lock-up torque converter that helps economy at cruise speeds. A second gear start facility aids traction in low-friction starts. The manual box has an upgraded clutch able to handle the extra torque of the turbo-diesel. To qualify as a proper off-roader, the Prado gets a dual-range transmission with a transfer case operated by a lever on the transmission tunnel. Full-time four-wheel drive is via a centre differential that can be locked for serious off-road work. This operates automatically when the system is operating in low range. The traction control system available on V6 models can't be had with the turbo-diesel.
