TOYOTA claims all 2001 model 78s (78 Series was released in 1999), have new front suspension calibration to improve handling and steering response and that all 78 Series turbo-diesel models have a revised front lateral control arm and steering relay rod. On paper these claims look good and the vehicle's coil spring front suspension is certainly a welcome relief when compared to the front leaf springs that have been fitted to LandCruiser utes for decades. But despite Toyota's engineering efforts the vehicles recirculating ball and nut power steering is still vague and over assisted when travelling in two-wheel drive. The steering wheel has tilt-adjustment only and the large diameter steering wheel is well matched to the turning dynamics of the vehicle - turning circle is 13.4 metres kerb to kerb and requires 4.1 turns lock to lock.
