Toyota reduces Kluger prices

BY PHILIP LORD | 13th Oct 2010

TOYOTA has reduced the price of its Kluger by up to $1000 and refreshed the medium SUV with a mild mid-life facelift in an effort to stave off the hungry hordes of fresh competition nibbling at its sales.

Toyota Australia senior executive for sales and marketing David Buttner explained that the price reduction was to keep the second-generation Kluger, which was first released in 2007, competitive against newer models in the segment.

“You have to retain interest when you’re in the middle of the life-cycle,” said Mr Buttner.

Kluger is averaging 14 per cent market share to the end of September while in the same period in 2009 it had snared 17.8 per cent.

The facelifted Kluger features a new front bumper, lights, grille, tail-lights and door mouldings. Inside, all grades receive a new centre dash colour plus 50:50 split-folding for third-row seats in seven-seat models.

The Kluger has been given a price chop of $1000 at KX-S grade, for both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models, seven-seat KX-R models are $800 cheaper, KX-S is $500 cheaper and the range-topping Grande is reduced by $414.

Toyota had priced Kluger at a premium against its competitors, with the new $39,990 price for the facelifted entry-level KX-R 2WD model means it is now just $100 more than the Ford Territory TX.

The other volume competitor in the segment, Holden’s Captiva, starts at $38,490 for an equivalent specification – V6 auto – although the entry point for Captiva is cheaper again, at $35,490 for the four-cylinder SX 2WD.

Toyota has also given its HiAce van a refresh, with the mildly made-over model wholesaled to dealers this week. Pricing is down $650 to $33,890 for the entry-level 2.7-litre LWB van, but other models have been dealt increases, with the 3.0 TD LWB lifting $350 to $37,690.

2011 Toyota Kluger pricing:
KX-R 2WD 5-seat $39,990
KX-R 2WD 7-seat $42,690
KX-S 2WD 7-seat $50,990
Grande 2WD 7-seat $60,990
KX-R AWD 5-seat $44,490
KX-R AWD 7-seat $47,490
KX-S AWD 7-seat $55,490
Grande AWD 7-seat $65,490
