THE HiLux 4x4 range shares the same suspension attributes. Up front Toyota uses an independent double wishbone with torsion bar and double-acting shock absorber, and at the rear a rigid axle with leaf springs and gas shock absorbers. The front of the Toyota is unique in that it runs the torsion bar to the top wishbone, which gives the vehicle an excellent ground clearance of 225mm and protects the torsion bar itself from damage. The SR5 suspension can carry a payload of 969kg, giving it a gross vehicle mass of 2730kg. Approach angles are good with 37 degrees at the front and 35 degrees at the rear - due mainly to the high stance of the vehilce. The ride and handling are comparable to other light commercial 4x4s and the Hilux's long wheelbase handles well empty or loaded, despite some kick back from the firm rear springs. The Hilux is fitted with under-body protection through well placed heavy-duty bash plates and stone guards, and can be hung-up on rough ground without risking damage to important drive components.
