A SWEEPING car-like dash and instrument panel give the HiLux a very modern, functional look. The instrument panel is basic and dominated on the left by a tachometer, which is standard equipment. The tacho's large circumference makes it easy to read at a glance - something you often do when pushing a diesel around to ensure you don't stress the engine or spend time outside the optimum torque zone. Diesel's require pre-heating before starting and the glow plug indicator lamp on the HiLux is easily found once you know where to look. It is located among the many warning lights that illuminate as part of a "safety/operation check" measure provided before starting the engine at the ignition 'ON' position. A dash-mounted CD player and AM/FM radio/cassette is standard with front door-mounted speakers. The lockable glovebox is of adequate size and operates with the ignition key. There is also an additional dash top compartment on the passenger side for smaller items like sunglasses. Toyota's integrated air-conditioning is an option across the range and works well as a demister and for cooling the cabin.
