TOYOTA’S seventh-generation HiLux ute has landed in Australia and what a revelation it is. Bigger, more refined, safer, better value and equipped with stonking new 2.7-litre four-cylinder, 4.0-litre V6 and 3.0-litre turbo-diesel power, it also brings the option of a five-speed auto to go with its proven 4x4 drivetrain and single-cab, Xtra-cab and double-cab body styles. No fewer than 30 variant choices makes the latest HiLux a worthy replacement for a range that has served Aussie tradies and those on the land for more than three decades. Holden’s impressive Rodeo made serious inroads to HiLux’s market dominance last year – and combined with Commodore-based utes to clinch light commercial vehicle leadership for the first time – but the formidable and sporty new HiLux should easily maintain the Japanese ute’s status as the world’s most popular one-tonner.
