THE Echo was designed Echo under Toyota's GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) program to meet international safety standards for severe crash types. A driver's airbag and seatbelt pretensioner is standard on all Echo models, as are whiplash injury lessening (WIL) front seats. All seats, with the exception of the centre rear position in the sedan, have adjustable head restraints. ABS brakes and a front passenger airbag with seatbelt pretensioner are available in an option pack. Echo has body reinforcement for both frontal and side-impact protection, while the doors have side protection bars and inner and outer reinforcement panels. The fuel tank is located within the wheelbase to improve safety in rear impacts. Head impact protection (HIP) measures include soft upper interior sections on the roof side rails and inner pillars. The front pillar garnish and the B-pillar garnish also have energy absorbing ribs.
