Toyota teases all-new Corolla sedan

BY ROBBIE WALLIS | 13th Nov 2018

TOYOTA has revealed the first teaser of its all-new Corolla sedan, set for a global reveal three months after the 12th-generation hatchback arrived in Australia.

Set for a full unveiling on Friday, Toyota Australia said that the Corolla sedan is “at least a year away” from arriving in Australia, suggesting a likely arrival in early 2020.

A single image has been released showing the Corolla’s headlight and front bumper, which remains faithful to the hatch version, including its split headlight shape and LED lighting signature, that is similar to the Volkswagen Arteon.

The lower bumper adds an LED light strip across the new, squared-off outer air intake, while the lower bumper has been adjusted, removing the upward-curving front splitter for a broad honeycomb grille with black trim elements.

Toyota’s badge has also moved from in between the headlights to sit higher up on the front of the bonnet.

No concrete details have been revealed on the Corolla sedan, however it is expected to share the hatch’s underpinnings, namely the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform that also forms the basis for the Camry and Prius.

This differs from the outgoing Corolla sedan, which was built on a separate platform to the hatch version.

Powertrains from the hatch are expected to carry over to the sedan, including a 125kW/200Nm 2.0-litre aspirated petrol unit, driving the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Given the sedan will share the same architecture as the hatch, it is expected to be offered with a hybrid variant for the first time, namely a 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid unit producing a combined 90kW and unspecified amount of torque.

The new Corolla sedan is also expected to be lighter and roomier inside than the old version, given its fresh underpinnings.

More details on the all-new Corolla sedan will be revealed when the model is revealed at 1:00pm on Friday AEDT.
