One million Corollas

ONE million Toyota Corollas have been sold in Australia. The milestone was announced this week, four months after the Japanese small-car range celebrated its 40th anniversary in Australia.

The million sales mark was also achieved four months after the release of redesigned, tenth-generation 150-series model, which has continued Corolla’s title as Australia’s top-selling small car since 2000 and Australia’s second most popular model since last year.

The new Corolla, available in both five-door hatch and four-door sedan body styles priced from $20,990, proved more popular than Holden’s Commodore in May this year, its first month on sale.

The nameplate was also Australia’s most popular model once in 2005, twice in 2006 and in January 2007. Comprising one-fifth of all Toyota vehicles sold in Australia, it is also the company’s best-selling model.

Corolla’s million sales figure in Australia comprises 666,734 locally-manufactured examples and 333,266 imported versions, including 8142 4x4 models.

More than 33 million Corollas have been sold around the world, making it the biggest-selling car of all time.

“Australians love the Corolla,” said Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner. “That's because Corolla has always captured the imagination of the buying public.

“It's dependable, affordable and fuel-efficient - core values that bring Corolla drivers back to this popular vehicle, year after year after year. What's more, Corolla has gained in popularity over the past four decades - selling in greater numbers now than ever before.

“That's because Toyota has constantly managed to come up with the right concept to stay ahead of the times. I'd like to thank Australian drivers for helping to make Toyota Corolla the world's most popular car.”
