HOLDEN VR/VS COMMODORE 4D SEDAN (1993-1997)
THE quintessential Aussie family car with worthwhile extras - air-conditioning, alloys and cruise control. The 1995 VS update saw V6 refinements. Spacious, powerful, relatively economical and reliable but lacks rivals' sophistication, refinement or quality. Still, it's easy and cheap to maintain and fix.

FORD EF/EL FALCON XR6 4D SEDAN (1994-1998)
TICKFORD modifications on roomy, reliable Falcon base (gruntier engine, tauter suspension) mean XR6 is a modern day GT. Feature-packed, smart interior, excellent seats and distinctive bold quad-headlight look will ensure future classic status. But like the Commodore refinement and sophistication levels trail the Toyota's.

HONDA ACCORD 4D SEDAN (1993-1997)
GENTLE, classy, conservative sedan with immaculate build quality, deep refinement and blue-rinse reputation. Impresses as a long-legged cruiser thanks to smooth, economical and revvy four-cylinder engine. Interior roomy and soothing. But parts and servicing can be expensive, while the steering may be a bit light for keener drivers.

SUBARU LIBERTY 4D SEDAN (1994-1999)
THIS offbeat four-door sedan is refined and well built with all- wheel drive and a torquey, thrummy boxer four-cylinder engine. Rear cabin space tight for adults but boot is roomy and driving position comfortable. However the styling may be too bland for some, while parts and servicing can get expensive.
