OTHERWISE known (with minor styling changes) as the Ford Telstar. Also available as a five door hatch. Heavy steering on models without power assistance. Rear seat not generous. Exhaust prone to early corrosion. But styling inside and out is pleasant, while cabins are spacious and comfy too.
MITSUBISHI TP MAGNA 4D SEDAN (1989-1991)
SLIGHTLY wider body gives five-seater comfort and spacious boot. Injected 2.6-litre engine is smooth and the largest in the class, but performance and economy aren't special. Overly-light steering won't please keen drivers but the ride is supple. Auto gearboxes don't last long if neglected. Limited rearward adjustment of front seats for tall drivers.
SUBARU LIBERTY 4D SEDAN (1989-1994)
Quirky if dated styling reveals a fairly roomy and comfortable interior. The 2.2-litre boxer engine is thrummy but gusty, while the handling, steering and ride qualities are fine. All wheel drive is optional. Many are well equipped. Parts and service can be expensive, and many are now getting very tired.
NISSAN U12 PINTARA 4D SEDAN (1989-1992)
ALSO sold as the Ford Corsair, the front-drive Pintara isn't Nissan's finest. The 2.0-litre EFI engine is noisy while the optional 2.4 harsh but gutsy. Soft suspension means a wallowy ride, excessive body roll and strong understeer. Some looseness in body, with squeaks and rattles evident. Led to Nissan's Aussie downfall too.
