Toyota recalls Camry, Avalon

BY TERRY MARTIN | 26th May 2005

TOYOTA Australia has recalled Camry and Avalon models built between 12-20 May, 2003, after it was found that a rear suspension arm might have been incorrectly welded.

In instances where the weld is not to specification, the arm may break at the bush housing weld area, and in the worst case vehicle directional control could be affected.

The recall affects 1278 Camry and 167 Avalon vehicles, the owners of which will be contacted by letter.

It is the second suspension-related recall within a week involving Toyota Australia, with the LandCruiser Prado 4WD (built between May 22, 2001, and August 7, 2002) being recalled after a possibility that the front suspension lower ball joint might have been scratched.

If the vehicle is operated for an extensive period in this condition, excessive wear of the ball joint may occur with consequent looseness of the front suspension.

The driver may experience increased steering effort and reduced steering self-centring feeling and the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing a loss of vehicle steering control.

Again, all owners will be contacted by letter requesting that the return vehicle to their dealer for rectification.
