WHILE the automotive industry is arguing about which way technology needs to go to meet ever-stringent emissions targets – fuel cell? PHEV? Something else? – Tesla has simply gone out and done something about it.

Its mercurial founder Elon Musk hasn’t waited around to see which technology might come out ahead, or what’s coming around the corner. The Model S looks like a spunky Ford Mondeo that’s been sired by an Aston Martin Rapide and a Maserati GranTurismo – and that is its beauty. Despite what’s going on under the skin, on the outside it’s a handsome, bold and confident car.

What’s going on under that skin, though, is something else again.
