THERE are few mainstream car-makers today that don’t have an entrant in the increasingly competitive compact SUV segment… and those that don’t have one are almost certainly developing one.

Suzuki claims to have invented the segment with its cute but capable Vitara back in the late 1980s, and now, 14 years after the name was sent packing, it’s back, and the Japanese car-maker wants a bigger slice of the market this time around.

The 2015 Vitara is in showrooms now in two variants, one engine choice, a rather generous standard features list and some seriously good on-road dynamics.

Is Suzuki just playing catch-up in a game that it abandoned too early, or can the company that created the compact SUV regain some of its 80s glory?
