PEUGEOT 405 4D SEDAN (1989-1991)
THE D70 series 405 series did not have the solid, indestructible feel of earlier Pugs but it is a great handler. Front-wheel drive with a 1.9 four-cylinder engine and choice of five-speed manual or four-speed auto. Comfortable suspension and seats. Air-conditioning and power steering are standard.

NISSAN PINTARA 4D SEDAN (1989-1992)
PLENTY of engine performance but ride and handling are below standard. A fuel-injected, 2.4-litre engine drives the front wheels through a five-speed manual box or four-speed auto. Air- conditioning, alloy wheels, fog lights, power steering and radio/cassette standard.

MAZDA 626 4D SEDAN (1987-1991)
POPULAR, well finished model with a torquey 2.2-litre, 12-valve engine giving great performance. Rear seat room is a little cramped. Front-wheel drive with the option of five-speed manual or four-speed auto. Central locking, power steering, power windows and radio/cassette standard.

VOLVO 240 4D SEDAN (1983-1991)
AN old design but well developed over the years and good, solid family transport. Simple and reliable. Rear-wheel drive with a 2.3-litre, four-cylinder engine driving through five-speed manual or four-speed auto. Alloy wheels, metallic paint, power steering and radio/cassette player standard.
