SUBARU’S Liberty has spent most of its life under the volume new-car buyer’s radar. Sales were respectable but in its 25 years in Australia, never startling.

Despite a period when opposition could not have been more aggressive, the 2015 Liberty has suddenly become a star.

Almost overnight, it’s one of the nation’s biggest-selling mid-size cars.

What happened? The January launch saw the new-car price plummet, the wagon dropped and the car’s extensive restyling and packaging hit its sweet spot.

Now it’s suited up with a more contemporary body, an expanded equipment inventory – including EyeSight collision avoidance for all variants – and added refinement to the ride to ensure it’s placed on the shopping list of every mid-size sedan buyer.

Here, we test the mid-spec 2.5i Premium to see how it stacks up against the other big players in the declining mid-size segment.
