First look: Subaru's STi gets some pump action

BY JAMES STANFORD | 10th Oct 2007

SUBARU has released official images of its new Impreza WRX STi sportscar, confirming predictions it would be one of the boldest models to wear the evocative pink performance badge.

Due to be officially unveiled at the Tokyo motor show on October 24, the STi is instantly distinguishable from the regular Impreza model.

The hot hatchback features unique bodywork, including prominent pumped-out front and rear wheelarches.

Its aggressive front guards even sport vertical vents that allow air to flow out from the brakes.

The extensive sheetmetal changes for the STi prove Subaru is serious about making the range-topping a serious step up from the regular WRX.

Subaru sources have told GoAuto that feedback showed STi customers wanted their cars to be better differentiated from the cooking-variety WRX.

Apart from the blistered arches, the STi also features deeper bumper extensions, a quad exhaust pipe set-up at the rear, and chunky alloy wheels.

The production STi looks similar to the WRC concept that was shown at the Frankfurt motor show last month.

The main difference is the WRCar’s massive rear wing, which has not been carried over to the production STi. Instead, the STi sports a modest wing only slightly larger than the wing fitted to the regular WRX.

A leaked brochure has revealed the Japanese specification STi will use a turbo 2.0-litre boxer generating a healthy 227kW and 422Nm.

While this shows the Subaru will have the muscle to take on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, it is not relevant for Australian models, which are expected to take a different engine.

Australian specification STis are expected to come with a 2.5-litre boxer, but the power and torque output has not been confirmed.
