ALONG with its love-it-or-hate-it styling, the second-generation all-wheel-drive Subaru Impreza comes with many beneath-the-skin upgrades. 1999 saw the introduction of revised engines and transmissions, both manual and automatic, but the 2001 model comes with a stiffer body for improved ride, handling, NVH levels and occupant space and passive safety. In addition, the engine's performance levels have been retained, along with improvements in fuel consumption and emissions levels.
