NISSAN N15 PULSAR 5D HATCHBACK (1995-2000)
THE Pulsar survived the traumatic transition from Australian manufacture to a Japanese import with its good points intact. The 1.6-litre engine puts out 81kW and matches the best in response and smoothness. The LX level misses out on power steering but comes with central locking.

TOYOTA COROLLA 5D LIFTBACK (1994-1999)
THE Australian-produced Corolla has Japanese-level quality with appealing if conservative styling. The 1.6-litre, twin cam engine has a power output of 78kW with good low speed torque. Power steering and central locking are standard, as is air conditioning from September 1998. Ride and handling are good but constrained by the narrow section tyres.

FORD KJ LASER 5D HATCHBACK (1994-1999)
THE imported Laser hatch is one of the better looking medium hatches but the Liata equipment list is short, though it does have power steering. The twin cam, 1.6-litre engine produces a competitive 79kW and is near the top of the class for response and economy. Handling and ride are above class average.

MITSUBISHI CC LANCER 5D HATCHBACK (1992-1996)
THE Lancer hatch is the oldest design here but regular equipment and mechanical upgrades plus keen pricing have kept it competitive. Power output from the 1.5-litre, carburetted engine is only 65kW so performance is not one of the Lancer's strong points, especially with the three-speed automatic.
