SUBARU'S Forester comes closer to off-road credibility than most of its competition. Unlike RAV4s, HR-Vs and CR-Vs, the Subaru offers a low-range facility for entering areas where others might fear to tread. It's not as tough as a Suzuki Grand Vitara, but it is reasonably confidence-inspiring in the bush. The 2.0-litre flat-four Subaru engine performs surprisingly well, but the manual gearbox is a bit clunky. In Limited form it's well equipped and well priced. The strongest contender in the light duty four-wheel drive class?
