WHO would have thought a decade ago that a Subaru could lead its segment for value for money?

The Forester is – along with RAV4 – the most established nameplate in the medium SUV game, and the current model continues to be produced in Japan.

However, it is now more affordable than all South Korean competitors, with more premium technology in this 2.5i-S specification than a certain European rival, and it covers all comers with petrol or diesel, automatic all-wheel-drive availability.

From just under $40,000 before on-road costs, the Forester 2.5i-S looks to be a great medium SUV buy – but is this facelifted version of a five-year-old generation a genuinely great medium SUV?
