Paris show: Smart ForTwo and ForFour previewed

UPDATED: 08/07/2014 18:10 SMART has teased a glimpse of what its all-new sub-compact ForTwo and ForFour models will look like ahead of their public debut at an event in Berlin and an official unveiling at the Paris motor show in October.

In an official video highlighting the brand's design direction, two profile sketches are shown representing the two and four-seater models, but little detail is revealed.

Mercedes-Benz and Smart Australia senior public relations manager David McCarthy told GoAuto that the final decision to bring the new Smart range Down Under depends on pricing, but at this stage it is coming.

Mr McCarthy confirmed that an experiment with online sales earlier this year “worked well” and that if the petite pair does arrive in Australia, it is likely you will be able to buy one with the click of a mouse.

“We wanted to test the platform. We tried it out and it worked well. Now we are analysing all the data... watch this space,” he said.

The official Smart film reviews previous Forvision, Forspeed, For-us, Forstars and Fourjoy Smart concepts, implying some of the design features have filtered down to the production cars, but until the official debut we will have to wait and see.

The Smart's characteristic exposed passenger cell – called the 'tridon cell' – will be making a return, albeit slightly evolved, while a basic animation confirms the new ForTwo's track will be 100mm wider.

An increase to the width of the car is apparently in the name of stability, and Smart has resisted the trend of all-round growth, keeping the car's length of 2690mm.

Maintaining the length of the existing ForTwo will allow owners of the new car to continue exploiting the model's trademark nose-in parking in parallel spaces.

While the new brace of practical town-cars is expected to come to Australia, the Renault Twingo, which shares the Smart platform is not.
