First look: ForTwo breaks cover

BY TERRY MARTIN | 16th Nov 2006

SMART has released details of its new ForTwo two-seater, which arrives here next September.

The two-seater is new from the ground up but looks remarkably similar to the popular model that launched quirky micro-car concept to the world back in 1998. DaimlerChrysler has worked on giving the new car a better quality interior as well as a range of new engines.

The Smart will be powered by a new Mitsubishi-developed 62kW 1.0-litre turbo-petrol as well as a rumoured 33kW 800cc turbo-diesel that delivers a claimed 3.0L/100km.

DaimlerChrysler Australia is also believed to be looking at a dedicated electric version of the two-seater. The electric 30kW ForTwo is reported to deliver 30kW and offer a touring range of 150km.

The new Smart will make its debut at the Geneva motor show in March. Although similar in size to the outgoing car, the new ForTwo has grown slightly.

It is 200mm longer, 90mm wider and sits on a 60mm longer wheelbase. The luggage room has also increased from 150 litres to 220 litres.

Although Australian specifications and pricing is yet to be signed off, the newcomer is tipped to remain around $20,000 for the micro hatch with the cabrio around $23,000.
