Superb 4x4 Outdoor takes Skoda off road

SKODA will introduce the special edition Superb 4x4 Outdoor in October this year from $52,690, plus on-road costs as a Czech alternative to the Subaru Outback and Volkswagen Passat Alltrack.

When it arrives, the 4x4 Outdoor, which is only available as a wagon, will sit at the top of the Skoda Superb range, which was updated in July this year and saw a price drop across all variants.

The more rugged looking Superb will take on the all-wheel drive Subaru Outback which ranges in price from $38,990 for the 2.5i to $57,990 for the R Premium as well as sister company Volkswagen’s jacked-up Passat Alltrack which is offered in 130TDI guise only from $48,290.

The Superb line-up now starts with the 1.8-litre 118kW/250NM turbo-petrol four-cylinder Ambition 118TSI for $31,990 and works it way up to the $46,690 Elegance 125TDI wagon with its 2.0-litre 125kW/350Nm four cylinder turbo-diesel unit.

That same 2.0-litre diesel engine will feature under the bonnet in the 4x4 Outdoor and will be mated to a six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.

When the Superb line-up was refreshed last month, all-wheel drive variants were discontinued and the 4x4 Outdoor special edition is a now rare opportunity to snap up an off-road capable version of the wagon.

The all-wheel drive system in the 4x4 Outdoor is based on a Haldex clutch and under normal driving conditions most of the power is sent to the front wheels, but when the terrain gets tougher the Haldex engages the rear axle.

Adding to the all-wheel drive credentials is a rugged-looking body-kit with black protective front and rear bumpers and wheel arches. The 4x4 Outdoor is available with Candy White or Moon White metallic paint.

The 4x4 Outdoor gains all the standard features of the Elegance wagon, which includes front fog-lights, bi-Xenon headlights and LED running lights, automatic opening boot, 6.5-inch touch-screen and navigation, 10-speaker sound system, automatic parking with front and rear sensors.

In addition to this the 4x4 Outdoor adds 18-inch ‘Trinity’ anthracite alloy wheels, and the Driver Pack which is usually optional on the Elegance and includes Skoda’s fatigue detection system, keyless entry and start and sun shades for the rear windows.

Skoda Australia says the Superb 4x4 Outdoor special edition will be available until stocks run out.
