THIS year marks the 10th anniversary of Skoda’s return to the Australian market.

In that time, the Volkswagen Group’s quirky Czech brand has grown its sales volume each year and it has managed to build its market presence without offering a real SUV contender.

Sure, Skoda has the Yeti in its stable, but the boxy crossover has never struck a chord with Australian buyers, despite positive media reviews.

The sales performance is pretty impressive given the sheer number of SUV-obsessed Australians that won’t even consider a sedan or wagon these days.

Now Skoda welcomes the Kodiak seven-seat medium-to-large SUV, which is likely to move the brand further away from ‘quirky’ and closer to the mainstream.

We sampled the sole variant – for now – at the Australian launch to see how it stacks up.
