MAINTAINING a credible entry-level car at a price fixed to the original launch in 1997, Saab down-specced the bottom end of its 9-5 range to keep it under the $60,000 barrier. Buyers are asked to eschew alloy wheels and a 2.3-litre engine, but that's about the limit of the sacrifices. Climate-control air-conditioning, heated front seats, quality sound system with CD player, headlight wiper/washers are all still there. And the 2.0-litre turbo virtually makes up for any power drop with its quieter, smoother operation. Hard to believe it's a 2.0-litre in such a big car actually.
