AT the introduction of the 9-3, further improvements were made to the body structure, particularly in terms of side-impact protection. All Saabs have dual front airbags and head-thorax side airbags. Seatbelt pretensioners help hold passengers in place in the event of an accident. Saab calls its overall safety design concept "Safeseat", meaning all seating positions are optimised for safety, with five lap-sash belts provided. Standard equipment includes front airbags for driver and passenger, and side airbags in the front-seat backrests. The side airbags are inflated in two stages, and are designed to protect the occupant's chest and head. Anti-lock braking and traction control are also standard in the 9-3 Aero.
