RX4's front suspension is still of the MacPherson strut and lower wishbone type, though upgraded for off-road work. The lower wishbones are cast iron, the struts have been strengthened and a heavier-duty anti-roll bar added. Spring rates and damper settings were also modified for the greater work ethic. The independent rear suspension is unique to RX4, with the Scenic's four-bar design replaced by trailing arms, springs and dampers. These components are mounted on a detachable galvanised subframe that also carries the 4WD transmission components (viscous coupling, rear final drive and the driveshafts). Suspension travel has increased and ground clearance raised to a height of 210mm.
