UNTIL now there have been sporty diesel small-cars like the Ford Focus TDCi, BMW 120d and VW Golf GT TDI. But none have actually gone the next step to actually be a ‘hot-hatch’ in the manner of a GTI. So it’s a bit of a surprise that somewhat-under-the-radar Renault has stepped up to the podium with its respected Renault Sport-enhanced Megane RS dCi 175. With all manner of honed chassis, driveability and safety modifications to its name, this is Australia’s first diesel for petrol-heads. Whether you find the styling questionable or not, there will be little doubt that this car does exactly what it says on the label.
