Porsche slashes auto pricing

PORSCHE has slashed the prices of its most popular models in preparation for the arrival of its all-new 911 Turbo, which brings a number of new automatic transmission features not available on other models.

Effective from August 1 for all model year 2007 vehicles, Tiptronic S (automatic) pricing for all Boxster and Cayman models will be $4600 - a reduction of $2400 over the MY06 price of $7000.

Tiptronic pricing on 911 Carrera 2, Carrera 4 and Targa 4 models is now $5500 - a reduction of $2500 over the MY06 price of $8000.

According to Porsche Cars Australia, Tiptronic pricing has been reduced on those models because automatic versions of the new 911 Turbo (for the same $8000 premium as before) will come with four additional features.

They include a "Fast-Off" function, which keeps the 911 Turbo in its selected gear when throttle pressure is eased significantly (previously this could only be achieved by releasing the throttle completely before applying it again rapidly), and a new "Fast-Back" function, which drops to the next lowest gear when throttle is released rapidly and brakes are applied within 1.5 seconds.

PCA also points out that for the first time on any Porsche model, the auto 911 Turbo will accelerate quicker than the manual, with claimed 0-100km/h times of 3.7 and 3.9 seconds respectively.

Finally, unlike the same unit in other Porsche models, the new 911 Turbo's Tiptronic transmission has been upgraded to deliver faster gearshifts - another reason PCA has deemed appropriate a price reduction on Boxster, Cayman and lesser 911 variants.

Presumably, the fact Porsche's five-speed Tiptronic S auto has been fitted across its entire model range for almost a decade - and that the company makes no secret of its desire to eventually replace Tiptronic with a version of Volkswagen's DSG double-clutch automatic transmission (dubbed PDK) - are other reasons.
