Porsche puts stoppers on bikes

BY BARRY PARK | 3rd Apr 2013

SPORTSCAR maker Porsche is pulling one of its brand-named mountain bikes back to the workshop because its brakes don’t like the cold.

According to the recall notice issued to the Australian Government, the Magura MT8 hydraulic disc brakes fitted to the $11,244.74 Porsche Bike RS, as the model is known, “may malfunction” at low temperatures, and specifically below -10 degrees Celsius.

Equally as alarming, the notice says the brake system “may have a reduced service life and can fail suddenly”.

“If the brake system fails this poses a fall hazard to the cyclist,” it reads.

The bike draws on several of the technologies that Porsche uses in its road-going models, including a lightweight carbon-fibre frame, handlebars, stem and seat post.

Porsche says owners can contact the car-maker for an “immediate” replacement of the brake system.
