Variable turbo for next 911T

PORSCHE has broken with its highly secretive tradition by revealing next year’s all-new 997-series 911 Turbo will feature world-first Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) technology.

Seen in turbo-diesel engines for more than a decade but so far absent from petrol engines due to excessive heat, the 2006 911 Turbo’s VTG system was facilitated by the use of space industry-sourced high temperature-resistant materials from Borg Warner Turbo Systems.

Designed to improve engine flexibility and low-speed acceleration, VTG is claimed to combine the benefits of both small and large turbos.

As such, the new 911T is expected to offer both more power and driveability than the current 996-series model’s 310kW six-cylinder boxer.
