THE 406's centre console has gained chrome air vent controls and handbrake button, while a multi-function display groups time, date and outside temperature information, as well as an on-board computer. Peugeot also improved the ergonomics of the climate control system that is standard on all models and rain-sensing windscreen wipers are also used in the 406. The wiper rate varies according to the amount of rain sensed on the screen. Peugeot's indicator lever is on the left of the steering column, while the power window and mirror controls gained improved ergonomic design in 1999. The steering column is adjustable for height and reach and, unlike most European cars, the Peugeot locates its master light switch, Japanese-style, on a steering column stalk
