BMW E30 318i 4D SEDAN (1989-1991)
THE rear-drive BMW 318i captured the 1980s prestige buyer like no other, despite having a lacklustrehas 1.8 litre engine driving through four-speed auto or five-speed manual transmissions. The nicely laid out interior is built with typical Teutonic strength. Rear leg room is tight though. Excellent road manners are all worth it though.

AUDI 80 4D SEDAN (1988-1992)
THE under-rated German. The 80 offers excellent performance and handling together with a high standard of finish. The 1984cc, fuel-injected engine drives the front wheels through a three-speed auto or five-speed manual. Very well equipped, with air-conditioning, alloy wheels, central locking, power steering, power windows and radio/cassette as standard equipment.

HONDA ACCORD 4D SEDAN (1989-1993)
QUALITY and engineering excellence are Honda hallmarks, although spares and servicing can be expensive. The Accord has a 2156cc, fuel-injected engine driving the front wheels through a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual. The list of standard features is huge and includes power sunroof, four-speaker sound system and metallic paint, as well as the usual power-assisted items.

SAAB 900 4D SEDAN (1988-1993)
THE Saab has superb road manners, distinctive styling and Swedish character, with quirks like having to select reverse gear after parking the car to be able to remove the console-mounted ignition key. The twin cam, 16-valve, fuel-injected engine is smooth and powerful and four wheel disc brakes complement the stable front-wheel drive handling. Complex design means servicing and repairs need expert knowledge.
