TO torture an old proverb: "never judge a car by its cover". Wholly appropriate when considering Toyota's Avalon, the new full-size competitor for Falcon and Commodore. Under the skin it is a vehicle more than capable in many ways of matching it with the two icons of the local large car scene. Yes, it's spacious (very) inside, and rides and handles with impressive competence - both compensating for its bland looks.
