Opel previews Experimental concept

OPEL is set to show how its future models might look when it debuts its Experimental concept at next month’s IAA Mobility in Munch.

Offering what the Stellantis-owned German marque says is a “clear vision of where the brand will be heading in the coming years”, the model offers cutting-edge aerodynamics, a spacious and airy cabin, and what Opel defines as “next-generation head-up display technology”.

“The Opel Experimental gives an outlook on upcoming models and technologies, on the future design, even on a new era and the future of the brand,” explained Opel CEO Florian Huettl.

“This stunning concept car represents a guiding light and showcases once again Opel’s pioneering spirit.”

With not a drop of chrome to be seen, the Experimental uses bold lighting signatures and contrasting graphics to highlight its form – and to highlight the model’s efficient, all-wheel drive electric platform.

There are no unsightly wing mirrors to cramp the style of the Experimental’s dramatic tapering profile and muscular wheel arches; instead, a pair of integrated 180-degree cameras are set into the C pillar.

At the front, the new-look Opel Blitz sits atop Opel’s signature compass which is flanked by an elongated wing signature with an illuminated centre crease. The motif is repeated at the rear of the car where the compass signature forms the model’s brake light. In place of the Blitz logo, the tailgate features simple O-P-E-L lettering.

“Our new Opel Experimental gives a more extreme interpretation of our Bold and Pure design philosophy,” detailed Opel vice president of design, Mark Adams.

It gives shape to our vision of the future – many of the elements of its design and the mindset behind it will be visible in future production vehicles.

“The exterior design delivers an optimised aerodynamic performance in combination with a stunning silhouette while the interior offers an immersive and emotional user experience.”

Mr Adams said the concept model offers a host of “clever and optimised” aerodynamic solutions, including aero flaps at the front and rear, and a rear diffuser, to increase aerodynamic efficiency. The rear diffuser deploys and retracts depending on the “prevailing driving situation” and works in cooperation with active wheel flaps to “increase aerodynamic efficiency even further”.

Slotting between the European C- and D-segments, the Experimental is said to offer generous cabin space thanks to what Opel refers to as “space detox”. The steer-by-wire steering wheel folds away when not required while lightweight seats combine a “lean but durable structure” with 3D mesh technology fabrics.

Opel says the detox approach is continued with the experience at the ‘wheel. Drivers may personalise information according to their needs on what it calls the Tech Bridge – a new interpretation of the instrument cluster. Instead of using conventional screens, information is projected “using AI technology and voice control”.

The so-called Pure Pad, ahead of the front armrest, may also be configured to the driver’s preference allowing access to frequently used controls for media and climate control.

IAA Mobility Munich will take place from 5 – 10 September at the Munich Exhibition Centre.
