TOYOTA COROLLA 5D LIFTBACK (1994-1998)
THE Australian-produced Corolla has Japanese levels of quality with appealing if conservative styling. The 1.8-litre, twin cam engine has a competitive power output of 85kW combined with good low speed torque. The RV equipment level includes a CD player with ABS brakes and driver's airbag as options.

ALFA ROMEO 33 5D HATCHBACK (1990-1992)
THE Alfa looks smart and the 1.7-litre, flat four engine has plenty of power with 98kW but is short on low speed torque. The equipment level is competitive and includes air-conditioning. The driving position with offset pedals will not suit some people and there is a question mark over quality and reliability.

MAZDA 323 4D SEDAN (1994-2001)
THE Protege is a good all-round package with ride and handling near the top of the class. The convenience equipment is competitive although anti-lock brakes and airbag are not available. The 1.6-litre engine has 80kW and is not as economical as the Pulsar.

SUBARU IMPREZA 4D SEDAN (1993-1996)
THE Impreza's strengths are excellent traction and primary safety thanks to the constant 4WD transmission and versatile, wagon- style hatchback body. The flat four cylinder, 1.8-litre engine produces an adequate 76kW. The GX level equipment list is competitive with air-conditioning standard.
